UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center Named to National ‘100 Great Oncology Programs’ List

UVA Health and UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center have been recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review on its 2025 list of 100 hospitals and health systems with great oncology programs.

“These leading institutions have earned national distinction for advancing cancer care through groundbreaking research, innovative treatments and transformative clinical trials,” the national healthcare publication’s editors wrote in the list’s introduction. “This list highlights cancer centers led by world-renowned experts who are driving innovation, ensuring patient safety and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in cancer treatment and research.”

Becker’s described UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center – Virginia’s first National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center and one of just 57 in America – as a “nationally recognized leader in cancer care, research and prevention” that combines “holistic care with world-class innovation.”

“This is a well-deserved honor for a truly world-class team,” said Mitchell Rosner, MD, chief executive officer of UVA Health and executive vice president for health affairs at the University of Virginia. “Our care providers and researchers are not only providing patients across Virginia and beyond with the latest treatments, they are also developing the next generation of cancer care.”

The publication highlighted a nearly 500% rise in research participation over the past 10 years that is supported by $82 million in annual research funding. “The center’s experts are advancing treatments for prostate, lung and nerve sheath tumors, while expanding cancer prevention through partnerships with federally qualified health centers to improve screening access across rural regions,” the publication said.

UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center was also among the first 25 centers in America to offer radiation therapy guided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Becker’s notes.

“Our team is dedicated to providing the highest-quality, cutting-edge care, developing better treatments and accelerating diagnosis through our research and educating the communities we serve about cancer screening and prevention,” said Thomas P. Loughran Jr., MD, director of UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center. “This award from Becker’s reflects the commitment of our team to all of these vital missions.”
